On a recent photo shoot for Mitsubishi Elevators, my assistant and I got to shoot the beautiful 54-story Ritz Carlton and JW Marriott Hotel at LA Live. I grew up in Los Angeles County and was never really attracted to the downtown area but there has been a revival going on in the downtown area called LA Live and it’s very cool. It includes the Staples Center, hotels, movie theaters, a high-end bowling alley, shops and a dozen or so nice bars and restaurants. My assignment was to photograph the JW Marriott and Ritz Carlton for Mitsubishi who installed and maintains the elevators. Due to an over zealous security team we were given very limited access to the property, but still managed to get the needed elevator, lobby and exterior shots of the buildings. To keep everyone happy we had to shoot late at night so we wouldn’t disturb the guests. In the end, the client was very happy and we had no problems with hotel management or security.

Sometimes it’s better to shoot first and ask questions later. This is my favorite shot, which we managed to get from the roof of an adjacent building. It shows both the JW Marriott and the attached Ritz Carlton. |

For this shot I had my assistant in the elevator holding a radio controlled flash. |
